Laptop grinds to halt restarting

A friend runs XP SP2 Home on a laptop. Some relatives' kids were playing on her computer yesterday :-(

She called me this morning to ask how to brighten up a very dim screen display. I've done this for her before, and it normally involves just pressing a brightness button on her keyboard. But today this wouldn't work for her.

So I suggested she should restart the computer. She did this, and the restart process got to the XP "Welcome" screen then just wouldn't go any further - it just stopped booting up, leaving the hourglass on the screen.

I'm going to her house later to try and help - has anyone got any pointers for me please? I guess that trying to boot into Safe Mode should be my first plan - do you agree? If so, what then?

Many thanks for any thoughts on this.

Yep, boot into safe mode if you can. Then look in system tools & restore to earlier date. Reboot & fingers crossed :-)
