my laptop has an 'S3 Graphics Twister K + S3 Hotkey'. it struggles big time with some graphics applications. is it possible to buy an external graphics card (ie via pci) and disable the S3. any other alternatives to increase performance are welcomed.

Your laptop has a PCI slot?

Most laptops have the graphics 'card' integrated as a chip on the motherboard. It is extremely unlikely that your graphics can be upgraded.

If you post the exact make and model, I'm sure that between us we can confirm or deny the possibilty for particular laptop.
