This problem is happening more and more on my Compaq M700,P111, XP pro (fully updated),full McAfee Security and History Kill.

What would cause the laptop to freeze completely leaving the cursor stuck on whichever screen I happend to be viewing?

It's driving me to despare.

This is more than likely Heat related as it's a old computer and will be full of dust. See if you can get something to blow the cobwebs out through the vents

Try a new Graphics Driver. Also try removing all Programs other than AV and Firewall from Start\Run\Startup Tab and then try start and run of computer

PS you can disable all in the Tab, but do not go on the Internet without AV and Firewall. Use as that just to test and find the problem

I think it could possibly be graphics as it tends to do it when animated adverts, avatars or .gifs are involved.
