Laptop fails to hold date & time

My old IBM600E ThinkPad has been ailing for a while now...battery not holding charge more than 20mins..but OK used on mains adapter...cost of a new battery more than the laptop is worth !
Now despite attached to mains I get error message 163 & 173 every time at boot which refers to the date & time. Reset this & restart & it boots into Windows. If this was a standard PC I would suspect the Mobo battery...but does a Laptop have a mobo battery ? Anyone any ideas.

I found the same problem with my Thinkpad 380XD,the mobo battery was stuffed in the expansion boards hole.A replacement main battery for mine(02K6517/02K6516)was going to cost £100 to replace from most online stores, but a chap in Leyland,Lancs has these for a much more reasonable £36.His adverts on Ebay.
