Laptop DVD burner

DVD burner on laptop has just started to make what I can only describe as a 'hammering' noise when copying files to HD.

Copy operation hangs until I am forced to end which has crashed the machine once.

Is there any way I can test the functioning of the DVDrom in a similar way that a hard drive can be tested?

There is the Nero drive test but this just tests the speed that the device is copying at you can find it click here

If your drive has begun to make that sort of a noise thou I would guess that it is probably on the way out, if the device is under warrenty then you'll probably want to contact them to have it repaired.
