laptop connection to hdtv via vga cable

good evening folks. help!help! i'm pulling my hair out. the situ is this. intially i borrowed a 1.5m vga cable to view films from my pc both pc and tv pictures were on view,until i returned the vga and purchased one of my own a 5.m vga plugged in first day every thing was ok,except the pc had a blank screen and the tv was fine no probs. however the second day i went to view a film started up the pc the tv signal lasted only for about 10 secs and that's how it comes up every time i try to connect a picture onto the hdtv. could you please be kind enough as to assist me in my dilemna. many thanks. regards,len hill.

If it does not you have some other underlying problem...

If the instructions via MAT ALAN's link does not work try the 1.5M cable again, if this works your 5M cable is faulty.
