Laptop and car voltage

I notice that most cars these days have many extra "power point" outlets which I believed (?) could be used to run laptops.

My wife's laptop is a Compaq Pressario 2100, which runs off the mains via a transformer which supplies power at 18 volts.

I know that the voltage at the car outlet points varies between 12 and 14.5 volts - my question is can we run the laptop from these sockets?
