Laptop cant find its hard drive

  MCPR82 17:15 30 Sep 06

Turned on my laptop earlier (Dell Inspiron 8100, running XP) - two beeps and message

" Primary Hard Disk Drive Not Found"
"Fixed Optical Drive Not Found"

On entering setup (F2) the machine doesn't recognise the hard drive or DVD/CD Drive.

Have removed the hard drive from the PC to check all conections, but still nothing.

Any ideas - very gratefully received

Hard to suggest anything - normally if the HD `disappeared` I would recommend downloading a manufacturer's diagnostic and burning it to CD to test the HD, however if your CD is not recognised either, that's not an option.
Checked the IDE channels in the BIOS? Has your system clock been incorrect lately? You may just need a new CMOS battery.

I've checked the IDE in BIOS - clock is running perfectly, or so it seems. However the BIOS shows there as being no hard drive or fixed optical drive - all very strange.

Last action taken was to defrag the disk - that completed as normall and I then turned the PC off as normal.

Thanks anyway!!!
