Laptop bootup choice

My laptop is running XP home and when I switch on and before windows starts I get a DOS style page showing 2 text lines both saying "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition". one of the lines is highlighted and I am offered the choice of selecting either to boot from. There is a timer which boots the default selection if allowed to run.
Is the other option a leftover from PCWorld who supplied the machine?
Do I need the second option?
Since I never want to change from the default, can I: a)delete it?
b)remove the option to boot delay by changing a setting somewhere? TVM for any help
