Laptop Booting problem

My medion Laptop (2.4ghtz pentium/Win XP home)is giving intermittent problems when turned on. Sometimes I get a blank grey screen and a single bleep and the boot up goes no further. If I turn on and press F2 to enter set up, then press escape and exit without saving changes, the laptop boots up and loads windows.
I am presuming I have a BIOS problem, but can anyone advise?

Oh well, looks like I'm on my own with this one

Maybe problems in finding the HDD.

Check in the BIOS that the HDD is set to automatic.

Also worth slowing the boot incase the drive is spinn up slowly.
HDD not always detected in BIOS
As drives get older, they can take longer to get up to speed and become ready (available). This can then exceed the time it takes for the booting to look for the drive - so it doesn't find it.
The solution is often to make the initial part of the boot take longer, by disabling "Quick power on self test and/or making the system look for the floppy drive first by enabling "floppy seek".
Some BIOS even have a facility to put in a delay before the hard disk is checked.

Thanks fruitbat/\0/\. HDD is set to auto. I will try your solutions when I get the problem again - Typical, after starting the thread the machine has booted OK every time!
