Laptop Boot Failure

I have a Packard Bell laptop running Vista O/S. Two nights ago when I shutdown thers was a message on screen 'do not switch off downloading updates'.Over two hours later still the same screen so I switched off. Now on bootup I get a blue screen with the message 'installing 3 updates 0%'I wait but nothing happens. I have tried 'repair', 'load last known good configuration'with no result.Even when I try loading in safe mode the m/c stops with the same blue screen and message.
I have a horrible feeling that I will have to reinstall O/S.
Can anyone please suggest something less drastic?
