My old Dell laptop with XP will boot up OK and the Windows startup with the moving blue squares comes up fine. But after that I get a blank screen. I suspect a video problem but any ideas on what to do about it?

I have already tried getting into safe mode but had no joy. However, I will try downloading a graphics driver on my main PC but how will i get it into the laptop if it won't even boot into safe mode?

have you tried plugging it into your desktop monitor seeing if it boots up.
if it does it could just be the light in the laptop screen

Following your encouragement, I tried again to get into safe mode and this time maanaged to re-place the video driver - curiously enough with an older one! it worked, many thanks indeed
