laptop black screen

My friend's Sony Vaio 4, PCG NV 290, 4+ year old laptop; yesterday the screen flickered, and went black; she rebooted, the same thing happened.
Is there anything basic/ simple she can try before she thinks about having to buy a new screen?

yeah, dont buy a new screen!

Its undoubtedly the backlight or invertor.

Does the computer run and make sounds? if so shine a bright light at the screen and you will see something like parts of your windows desktop.

Time to take it to a repair shop then, theres nothing you can do.
