Laptop Battery Extremely Short Chargespan

I have an IBM Thinkpad A20m. Once fully charged, it seems to last about 5-10 mins before it's charge plummets from 90+% to 10% (almost instantaneously) and consequently shuts down. I have replaced the battery with a brand new one, but experienced exactly the same problem. Could this be a loose connection? If so, how might I find and rectify it? Could it be a software problem? Or something else? Any ideas?

Laptop battery's should be run down occasionally so they charge to full capacity. If you use your Laptop on mains with the Battery in the computer it will be at 100% all the time, this is not good for Laptop batteries.

PS mine is in the Fridge at 40%, I only put the battery in if I am going away
