Laptop for 12 year old under £300

  ARB 16:15 22 May 07

I have £300 +vat +case +software +OS +accessories to spend on a laptop for my 12 year old who has NO previous. I want to encourage good practice at an early? age. The problem is I have no experience in laptops under £700 + and so I do not know which one of the many on the market is a good buy.

I want WiFi and a DVDRW. I guess a card reader would be helpful as well.

Speed is not an issue but 1GB ram is a must.

A built in camera would be an advantage.

Disk from 40GB upwards will be fine.

Battery and weight are ot relevant. Nor is connect-ability.

Any advice please?

That'll be £354+VAT - the OS was not included but it is a good spec.

If you have the room get a desktop more spec for the money especially at the budget you suggest

At £350 including VAT and Vista installed, the Acer Aspire at Ebuyer is a very nice laptop. The only thing I have against the Acer is that it has a very highly polished screen. Excellent for picture crispness, but it reflects just like a mirror and shows every little mark of a fingerprint. At about the same price, you can get a widescreen Acer 5101 with Windows XP click here

Do you have to have a new one?

BigPockets and others sell models that are not quite the latest, but you will probably get a better spec for the price:
