Any ideas about the following message on a friend's laptop?

Machine was purchased new and has worked fine for the last few years, but recently this message has appeaqred. No tampering with machine so no reason for anything to have been moved etc.

POWER SURGE ON HUB PORT
A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.
For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.

This leads to a window that shows an unknown USB device which can be highlighted and then reset or a close option. The note says if you click close the port will cease to operate.

Whats plugged into the USB port as I presume from what it says something is trying to drag more power than the USB can provide.

2 USB ports on the lap top and just connecting an MP3 player, external hard drive, camera, printer etc. One port (upper) no longer functions, but is there any combination out of this lot which would draw too much power?

External hard drive perhaps, or maybe the printer. It depends.

What you could do is buy a USB powered hub and then regardless of what power anything asks for it SHOULD be ok click here or click here or click here

What I am getting at is I am wondering if one of the USB peripherals has developed a fault and is demanding more power, if so a powered hub should resolve it.

See if anyone else has a better opinion.

Hard drive should be plugged in on it's own as It's a USB and no Mains power adapter feeding it

Printer should be OK as that will be main driven

Try unplugging all USB devices and see if the problem disappears, if it does try plugging in a device, one at a time, and see if the problem reappears, that way you can find the device causing the problem.

There is a good USB troubleshooter at click here
