Lap Top Connection to Wireless Router fails !

I've just recently purchased an Acer Aspire 6935 laptop and I've connected it Ok to my Linksys wireless router (model is 3 years old).
I can only get a internet connection when I'm within a metre of the router but as soon as I move a distance away from the router I cannot connect (although the laptop shows a 5 out of 5 signal for the connection). My old desktop has no problems in connecting wirelessly and is 3-4 metres away from router. Also my Nintendo Wii can connect without issues.
Does anyone have any ideas why this happens. Was going to ring the Acer tech desk but at 50p a minute I thought I'd try you experts first.
Could it be a faulty wireless card in the new laptop ??
Thanks for your help

Some advices:

- Go to manufacturer website, download latest wireless adapter driver, uninstall old driver and install the new one.

- Check out why my wireless network speed is low articles click here to know other factors that affect wireless performance.

Hope it helps..
