Keypad 9 opens calculator

Just recently when I press 9 on the numeric keypad of my XP computer, the windows calculator opens. I've also noticed that when I press the 6 key (in Word for example), the hash symbol appears followed by 6 (ie. #6). I have run spyware and virus scans but the problem is still present. Any ideas?

I wouldn't think it was a virus - have you checked your Key settings in Control Panel>Keyboard, also is it the same with and without the Number Lock key pressed?

I have checked the settings in control Panel and can't find anything amiss. The keyboard is set to UK. With number lock off the calculator still opens with 9 pressed. However with the 6 key and num lock off, only hash (#) appears, no 6. I have also found that when the hash key itself is pressed, #6 appears with num lock on, but only # with numlock off.

I would try a different keyboard, yours may have developed a fault.

Thanks Technotiger. I tried another keyboard and the problem disappeared.
