Keyboards and new computer

I have a new computer, built and installed by a friend. It runs Windows XP Pro, like my old computer. The keyboard doesn't work properly; the two right hand keys of the middle row, including the @ one, don't produce the correct characters. Other keys seem to be OK. I've reinstalled the mouse software, but this has made no difference. I've also checked all my Regional settings and tried several different keyboards - all have the same problem. Any ideas?
