keyboard at startup

How do I get my keyboard to be recognised early in the boot up process to enable me to enter safemode. It is a usb type and isn't found until windows is loaded. If I want to enter safemode I have to plug in my old seriel port keyboard to do it

Can you not enable it first in the bios before boot up???>if you have the settings that is before you go in to safemode ,,just an idea !

Thank you VoG your link has shown me a way around the problem.
AaNnDdYy. thank you. I would like to enable it in the bios but I can't find it in there I have already looked. Somehow it will recognise the serial port but not the usb port until fully loaded
