keyboard response

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 running windows xp

I can be typing on for up to 2 hours without a problem.
Then the fault appears.
when a key is pressed loads of numbers are produced until the key is released.
It doesnt matter which key is pressed and the numbers are random and do not correspond to any key.
eg. w will produce a random set of numbers which will be different each time it is pressed.
this is the same for all keys

Has anyone come across this before? any help greatly appreciated.

If it comes up after that length of time, It would suggest that it is over heating, as the keyboard normally sends a list of numbers to the PC to represent which key has been pressed.
