keyboard language win xp

can somebody pleas tell me how to change the language setting on my laptop keyboard.
i have win me on my PC which gives you the option of which language to use IE English UK English American etc.
on my laptop which language i wanted to use was preset at British saying this is the most popular.
i OKed that only to find that when i now use the laptop some of the keys do not do what i am used too, IE if i use shift @ the @ symbol does not come up.
i am sure this is something simple but i am stuck so can any one please help ?

Control Panel - Regional and Languages Options.

Regional Options = English (United Kingdom)

Location = United Kingdom

Languages - Details - Settings - Default Input Language = English (United Kingdom) - United Kingdom.

Advanced - English (United Kingdom).
