keyboard failure on a Tiny laptop

a friend cannoy use his laptop because the keyboard is no longer 'recognised' by his laptop. The PC has not suffrered damage; it worked fine and the next time he gets a 'keyboard failure' message when switching on. The Tiny is running Win98 on a Pentium 3.

Is this a software problem: might he correct the problem if he reinstalls Win98 from disc and if so will he lose the info on the hard drive?

Thanks

Geoff

can he not connect a usb or ps2 keyboard to see if that will at least get him into windows and past the error message?
