Keeps crashing!

  so3003 19:07 30 Mar 03

My computer has recently started having a few problems. Random programs are crashing (ie not the same one each time) with illegal errors etc, and internet explorer is crashing around once or twice an hour. When I start up the system I am quite often given an Explorer illegal error etc too.

Any suggestions as to how I can prevent these from happening, or at least minimise their occurrence?

I'm running Win98, p3 500, 192mb

some generic tips:

empty your cache (temp internet files / cookies)

defrag the hdd

run scandisk

try a repair of IE (if using version 6)

Get a registry cleaner - eg ms regclean or the one from - and run it to see if there are any registry probs.

It sounds like you need to reformat, but before you go that far try using JV16 powertools to tidy up the registry click here
