keep having to reinstall xp.

  do-gull 13:26 04 Jun 07

Over the last year or so I have had to re-install windows on my laptop at least 4 times.
I close it down correctly but for some reason the black screen appears saying windows did not close down correctly, this may have been due to a power cut or by someone pressing reset button.
It then gives me the following options.

1. start windows normally

2. last known good configuration

3. start windows in safe mode

However none of them work and I have to reinstall windows.

No ideas as to why this happens but three suggestions

1) Try just turning it off, waite a short while and then try booting up again.(silly I know)
2) After you install windows again do a chkdsk.
3) get HDD diagnostic download from HDD site and run that.

I tried your suggestions

1) tried this each time with no luck.

2) everything passed.

3) everything fine.

Hi, download and run CCleaner click here just a fair chance it may clear up whatever is causing this.

Is there anyway I can save all programs files etc on the laptop so that if I need to do a re-install I can just load up firefox, comodo, avg etc without trawling through the net and downloading them one at a time?

Not sure how to do this, but you can partition your HDD into two parts. put Windows O/S on the first part and all your programs on the second part, then if windows goes belly up you only have to install windows.

Usually one could save items to a CD or DVD, but in the case of AVG, Comodo etc you would almost certainly need to actually re-install them - I doubt very much whether these items saved would work properly, mainly due to Registry needs.

"Is there anyway I can save all programs files etc on the laptop"

External hard drive?

USB pen drives (my preferred option)?

To follow Pamy's good idea, you would probably need something like Partition Magic.

Or - choose from this list of free Partitioning software
