JavaScript problem with MSN

I have no idea what javascript is. Every now and again I get an update request for it, and I accept. But it never successfully downloads/installs. It has never caused an issue so I have always ignored the fact that it never installs/updates.

However, I have recently started using MSN Messenger. And it does seem to have an affect. When I try to do certain things in MSN, a word document opens with the following text on it:

"Windows Live ID requires JavaScript to sign in. This web browser either does not support JavaScript, or scripts are being blocked.

To find out whether your browser supports JavaScript, or to allow scripts, see the browser's online help".

I don't know what it means.......any ideas much appreciated.
