Javascript help

I'm trying to show/hide elements on a page using JS. I've got some code to do this using the id attribute, which works fine. What I want to do though is show/hide multiple instances of the same element but cannot find any code to do this. Is it possible to do this, and if so, can anybody provide any code please? If it helps, the code only needs to work on IE5.5 and 6.

I'm not very familiar with this side of javascript, but if you're using IDs, could you use classes instead? Apply a class to each group of elements.

My knowledge of javascript is also limited, but JS doesn't seem to recognise classes for this purpose. I have come across class.Name but can't get this to work. Don't know if it should?
