Java update.

I have just had a popup appear telling me that an update is available for Java and an icon has appeared in the task bar. If I put the cursor over the icon it tells me that Java update will check on the 23rd of each month (today) for updates and that the last one was 23rd august (last month). There is also a box saying "notify me before downloading" and this is ticked. I have never seen this before so can anyone tell me if this is liable to be a spoof or genuine.

latest version "Java J2se 6 [updated]"

It is genuine. The task is called jusched.exe and is added to your startup. I tend to disable it and wait for updates via Filehippo and the like. Sun Java has a habit of leaving the old unpatched versions of itself in place, I prefer to remove and re-install.

Many thanks Sunny Staines and brundle. Will deal with it as genuine.
