Java Runtime Environment - What is this?

Can someone inform me what 'Java Runtime Environment' is or does? Is it important to have?

Hi, yes, it is important to have. Several programs need Java in order to run properly. I expect you have had the Jana applet pop up on your screen - it is safe, and needed.

If you've got Windows XP, you've almost certainly got Java Runtime Environment. Click on 'Start' then 'Control Panel' then 'Add or Remove Programs'. Have a look for 'Java' or 'J2SE Runtime Environment'. If it's not there, or is anything other than J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9' then you need to download and install the current version.

Go to: click here
Click on the link named 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9'
Click on 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
Reboot your computer
Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Reboot your computer
