for the past few days i have been trying to download a podcast from itunes. it takes ages and is only about a third of the way through before im informed that the "network timed out". What does that mean?

that the download stopped, and the server connection timed out - it does that automatically if there's no download traffic. It's a bit like being connected to a phone exchange when nothing's going on - after a while the exchange automatically times out, and puts a 'screamer' down the line to alert you. The server does much the same thing, to prevent too many dead connections.
