It’s all gone gobbledegook!

A chum's machine [Evesham/XP Pro] on startup presents icon titles as googldegook.
If he attempts to open a document -ditto, all texts present as symbols [?? > Etc.]
Over the phone, I asked him to attempt to do a screen capture so that I had a picture of what is going on.
Graphics program opens, but will not open a file.
It will not start in safe mode, to revert to last known working.
The recovery disk in drive will not load although the drive spins up.
I advised him to contact Evesham, which he did and they attempted to talk him through a routine, which had no effect.
They then said put in the floppy - which did not have. So, they are sending him one.
At appears his machine is a RAID set up where two HDD's appear as one 'C' drive
So it looks like he will have remain in the hands of Evesham as it is under their warranty/service umbrella.
But I am intrigued nonetheless.
Any ideas suggestions as to what is/has happening?
What exactly is a RAID setup?

Thank you FB I'll add that to my 'helpmeflock'data base.
The gobbledegook aspect though, is this the route cause the raid aspect corrupting or something else entirely?
