Its all gone!

Previously my computer worked fine, no new hardware of software had been installed for a while and I had not messed with any system changes. But a few days ago when I started my PC, Windows XP Pro loaded and I logged on, however the log on sound was late by a minute, none of my desktop shortcut folderes opened (only a search option in their sub menus when right clicked on). All applications have no icons and do not load even though in their properties they are still exe files. I can only open folders including control panel, my computer, and my documents in explorer which I have to start by right clicking on the start menu. I cannot open any files in these folders. I really dont know what to do and i need a lot of files off the computer that I cannot back up anymore!

If you've done all the obvious ie: scandisk, virus check, system restore then bang the XP disk in the drive and boot from CD in the BIOS

When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you do not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, read this Warning!!

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

You will have to reapply all the hotfixes you have grabbed from the net.
