Is it worth upgrading wireless card?

My son's 4 year old Dell laptop gets very poor wireless connection to our home network unless it is very close to the modem/router. However, my 3 month old Dell laptop gets 'excellent' pretty much anywhere in the house.

Is it likely to be the wireless card in his laptop that's to blame? And would it therefore be worthwhile getting a 'g' standard card. He isn't so much concerned about the speed of the connection as the fact that it drops out completely when he's in the middle of an MSN conversation or downloading something.

The newer "g" protocol should provide more reliable connections.
