Is it worth taking an image of XP

  TommyRed 21:56 25 Nov 03

Gonna be setting up XP tomorrow when the desk arrives, what I want to know is how safe is System Restore and can it be trusted. I have True Image on my 98SE and was going to do an image after all my programs are loaded, what the verdict on this. BTW XP was pre-loaded and I only have a recovery CD. TR

In my experience System Restore is good -- until, as in my case I had a really serious problem and System Restore would not restore (related to the other problem).

So, if you have imaging software, use it!

i dont like system restore, trust an image more!

worth the time to do an image!

Personally I'd say yes, system restore can be a bit of a space hog on your HD, viruses can also be trapped in restore points, deleting them will lose all restore points created too.

I use DI 7 on my system

very reliable
I have had it running with very few minor problems for about 18 months

System restore is very good.

I back up important stuff as always, but have never lost any data.

It is up to you if you image it, only you can decide that really.

However I have full retail version and not restore pack, not that should make any difference.

I belive that the restore packs are infact an image.

I would say yes without a doubt.

I've got True Image too and wouldn't be without it.

As I've said before it's saved me a good few times

I'm a great believer in belt and braces. While SR has saved my bacon in the past, TrueImage is always worth having 'cos SR can fail to work and it will always be just when you need it.
Make an image.
