See what your motherboard can update to i.e CPU and RAM and if you can afford it get it. It will help, but you have enough to install XP already

your current system is close to the minimum requirements to run xp so the computer may run slower if you look on microsoft xp page this will give you more info

NO your CPU is no whare like fast enough, to do any us full work with XP. Stick with 98se it's faster. Believe me I have both

Ive just set-up a PII 400 128mb pc100 sdram unit with a 20gb hd & it runs reasonably fast & stable in use .Thats not bad considering I use a 2.8ghz 1gb ddr unit most of the time.Points to watch though is if its an old unit check the Cpu Heatsink & fan assemblies for build up of grime /dust (same for graphics cards) & hard drive size needs to be reasonable larger than before as Xp loads a fair bit when setting up.but still well worth trying.

The main question is that: "What you want to do which cannot be done by 98SE?"

The whole of your machine will worth less than a legal copy of WinXP. So what is the point?

He's talking Celeron

It will work and, yes, you can install over the top.

It will be a bit slow but would improve if you added more memory.

My New Laptop is a Celeron P4 2.2g and I had to install another 256mb memory as it was working slow
