PS2 port's should be considered just like com ports. If you look on the back of your PC you will see a comm port, notice it is similiar to a printer port in that the attached cable is screwed into place. So as everyone has pointed out, PS2 are not intended as plug & play like USB.

From click here
Connect the keyboard to the computer:
Make sure the computer is turned off.
Carefully push the Keyboards's connector into the computer's PS/2 Keyboard Port.
When the computer is turned on, later, you will notice the Keyboard's LED's flash briefly.

Do not connect or disconnect the keyboard when power is on. Turn off the computer first.

Connect the mouse to the computer:
Make sure the computer is turned off.
Carefully push the Mouse's connector into the computer's PS/2 Mouse Port.
Once the computer is turned on, later, the operating system software will automatically detect the mouse.

Do not connect or disconnect the mouse when power is on. Turn off the computer first.

Connect the USB peripheral to one of the computer's USB Ports.

USB peripherals can be plugged in and unplugged when the computer is on.
