Is it o.k to compress certain folders?

I would like to free up some hard drive space, and was wondering if it would be o.k to compress some folders? The service pack files folder in C:/Windows in particular was one i was thinking of compressing. But will i mess anything up by doing this? I don't want to do it if it will make my system run worse. Thanks

Delete the $NTuninstall$ folders left by Windows Updates as well. They are already compressed (hence the blue text) but it all helps when space is tight.
