Is it live update?

Perhaps wrongly, I leave my XP desktop on overnight. Sometimes the next morning all I have is a black screen (hibernation OK?)with a white mouse arrow which responds OK to movements but that is all. Only way I can start again is to turn off power switch at back, unplug and leave for a few minutes then reconnect and start again. I think, but am not sure, that it only happens if there has been a a Windows Update. Any thoughts out there as I don't think it is terribly good practice to have to turn the power off like that.

I have never had any real success coming out of hibernation etc., I turn my pc off when I am not near it - saves power and therefore money.
