Could someone out there please tell me what an ISO file is.

It's a file from which you create a working CD - a kind of "CD-image"

In Win XP - incidentally, you can right-click on the file and choose "Create CD" and it will go away and write the CD for you, such that you end up with a CD just like the original the ISO was made from.

you need the isorecorder plugin for xp`s own burning software to create an iso. click here
