irql error message & then shut down & re-boot

My daughter has a problem with her PC. Her being in America and me in UK I can't get my hands on it.

She is running Windows 2000 pro & has just got ADSL. The company provided an ethernet modem (which plugs into her RJ45 socket). This worked for a week but the PC has now, for several days, started showing the message:
"irql_not_less_or_equal

Step: 0X000000D1, 0X000000FF, 0X00000001, 0XBFA8FAEA.

Address BFA8FAEA at BFA89000, datestamp 3d2b 4434-
mrxsmb.sxs

Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk:"

It then counts down & then switches off and restarts the computer. The wallpaper disappears on reboot and the machine runs normally for 3 minutes and then goes through the same procedure again.

She is not running an anti virus prog (yes I know...) but will do this evening. I don't think it looks like a virus, I suspect it's more like a conflict.

Any suggestions please?

If you plug "irql_not_less_or_equal 2000 0X000000D1" into Google/Groups you'll get quite a few hits. This looks likely click here;en-us;309660

Sorry I didn't manage to paste the whole link. I'll try again

If it didn't work this time, copy and paste this, changing xxxx to http and deleting the blanks

She tells me that she has all the latest Windows 2000 updates, that may not include SP3 though. I'll ask.

Cheers,

Wint

Thanks again, found the problem.
I wouldn't have thought of combining the error message as you did; "irql_not_less_or_equal 2000 0X000000D1"

That gave some good hits and the one that did the trick was a pointer to a conflict with an old Logitech mouse driver.

After installing AVG Anti Virus and removing 7 virus's, the Logitech driver could be uninstalled and the system is running smoothly again.

A timely reminder to run and update virus programmes.
