ipods & Windows Media Player?

Hi all,
Just bought first Nano. I knew they normally run on Apple's AAC format but was expecting to be able to convert all my WMA files to MP3 and still lob them onto the ipod.
As far as I can see, WMP won't even acknowledge the ipod exists. Consequently I've had to download itunes and convert all the wma to aac throught it, and it's taking a very long time (40G)!!

Isn't there any way to run an ipod simply through wmp using mp3?
