Ipod not recognised in Win 7 or able to sync

Hello everyone,

I hope I'm ok to post this here :)

I have a new Acer All In One pc running Windows 7. I've bought a 4th gen Ipod classic 40gb off my brother & firstly when I connect the usb it says Usb device not recognised & in Itunes it isn't showing up to sync it.

I've looked endlessly on forums for the answer - I have rebooted the Ipod, installed the latest itunes & in my device manager I checked the drivers were up to date.

I'm lost. Can anyone help? Thanks so much :))

A couple of things to try.
plug in your Ipod and but it in Disk Mode: Reset by holding Menu/Middle buttons, then hold Middle/Play until disk mode appears.
Leave it plugged in.

1- Go to Control Panel
2- Open "System"
3- Click "Hardware" tab and click "Device Manager"
4- Find and maximize "Universal Serial Bus controllers"
5- Right click "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver". Click "Uninstall" (If it's not installed, get it with Itunes.)
6- If it doesn't all work out right there, unplug, replug you Ipod and you should be good.

Many thanks for your quick response. On step 5 it is showing as an unknown device....should I still uninstall that?
Sorry I am very untechnical
Thank you for your help so far :)

Ok, well, I find a solution but not the ideal one. It WOULDNT work in Windows 7 but when I put it on my Vista laptop it was all where it should be, so I can use it that way.
Thanks for all your help anyway :)

As a further suggestion, go to Safe Mode, then plug in the iPod then go to device manager, find the iPod and right click and "update driver"

I have had siniar problems on iPod Classics. Not sure if you have an Apple store anywhere near you, there is one near here in Southampton. Thay were quite helpful. Otherwise I assume you have been through the whole "reset" procedure.

Yes...I've tried so many different things today.

In a perfect world I would still like to get it on my new computer as I'm giving my son the laptop, but we can manage ;) Its just a relief to get it sorted!
