ipod nano

Hi you clever guys out there. There must be an answer to this somewhere. I have just acquired an ipod nano 16Gig 4th Gen. I can see in the options sections that there is a part for storing audio books and videos. However, when I download my audio book (borrowed from library and not bought from itunes store) it will only go in with my other music tracks. Similarly, my home videos will go in with my pictures and not in the video section. Consequently, only stills will appear and no video will play. Do these sections only work with bought audio books and videos, or am I missing something. For the life of me I cannot see any way of directing them in the right place. Can anybody help please??????
