If it's a 4gb model then I'm gonna go ahead and presume it's a mini. The first generation mini's are supposed to have around 8 hours playback, although in real life it's comes up a little short, but not as short as 1.5 hours, you should be getting around 4 or 5 times as much, battery has probably seen it's day.

I ordered and fitted a new battery in my sons ipod over Christmas. You can get a replacement if you click here You have the choice of sending it off to them or doing it yourself. I found it relatively easy to replace, just follow their instructions.
