whenever my wirelss network starts up on my laptop I get a message on my main pc saying there is an ip conflict and I get kicked out. It has worked quit happily since I purchased it 6 months ago. Why is it suddenly doing this now

Disable DHCP and assign the IPs manually. If need to know how to do that, you'll need to mention your router's make, model and revision. Some related threads may be found click here

Are you shutting your laptop down or are you putting it into Standby or Hibernation?

If you hibernate the laptop, then boot the PC and get an IP address from the router by DHCP, it might be allocated the same address that the laptop had. Because the laptop hasn't "released" that IP address, when you bring it out of hibernation, two computers in the network have the same IP address and you have a conflict.

As ade.h suggests, the solution is to give one or both computers a fixed IP address, which should be outside the router's DHCP pool.
