I/O operation failure

this message appears sometimes at switch on and then closes the pc down "An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush one of the files that contain the system's image of the registry." Does anyone know of this message and how to repair/get rid of it? When the system starts all is well. Thanks in advance

thank you iambeavis it is the same error message and I may well do a complete format and start again - this was a new system and a clean install only 1 week ago.
