When I first start windows 98 I am getting an error message flash up that says "invalid sync".

What does this mean?

did you fix click here yet?

my guess is to try starting in safe mode and select 60hz or optimal for your monitor at 800x600 for a 15' or 1024x768 17' monitor and see how you go. if it then starts ok select 'optimal' for your monitors refresh rate at the resolution you are using.

Still working on it!

It's not actually my PC....

....so if the directx 9c update doesn't work...

If all fails I think I shall just suggest they buy a windows 2000 fresh install cd.

Sync error has gone anyway. Simply lowered refresh rate to 70.

go for XP if upgrading as its cheaper if not the same price than 2000 pro to purchase and works with more hardware and software. win 2k is designed for businesses mostly.
