"Invalid boot file. Booting from c:\windows" Thats the message I get when pc starts to boot up. Every thing works fine after that.I've checked it out but seems to need the XP setup disc which I do not have. the question is whether its worth bothering about considering my lack of know how.

What is in your Boot.ini file - start, run, msconfig to find out. Post it here.

I had this problem last week using xp pro. My boot.ini file kept changing itself. I found the culprit was msn messenger, which I disabled and all has been fine since. I booted in safe mode, and in C:\ deleted boot.ini and made a new file containing.....

[boot loader]
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Not sure if this is your problem, but who knows.

Go with Vogs suggestion since you don't have a disk and perhaps someone can see the problem
