Internet problem

I have just had to resetup my system after a harddisk replacement and have the following Internet problem. Although most websites, including Google, open normally, some sites, for example those associated with newspapers, refuse to open, while the ISP homepage only gets as far as the toolbars. The Dr.Speedtouch diagnostics software recognises that there is something wrong with the Internet connection, but the suggested solutions have not worked. I am using IE7 on fully updated WindowsXP with all security and privacy settings set to default. I have tried replacing the ZoneAlarm firewall with Windows firewall and temporarily disabling AVG antivirus without success. Some emails have frames with only a small red cross in the corner indicating that there, too, something is failing to download. Scans have not shown up any problems with malware. Grateful for any suggestions to overcome the problem.
