Both my Internet Explorer and my Outlook Express have sprouted clones entitled Internet Explorer (2) and Internet Explorer (3)and Outlook Express (2) and
Outlook Express (3). Can I delete these additional programmes safely?

If these are shortcuts (.lnk files) then yes.

As long as you dont delete them from "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express" (for outlook express) or "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer" (for IE) then shorcuts can always be recreated.

Some time ago I did a System Restore and found that I then had more than 7000 files of type abcdefg.xyz(2). I deleted the lot with no problems. They were duplicates, not shortcuts.
